Regardless of version, this problem usually indicates that the Building Blocks file is damaged. In Word and , it is called Built-in Building Blocks. Where you want the number to appear, type "Page X of Y" without the quotation marks. With the insertion point in this field, press F9 to update the field, which will now show the number of pages. This will open the Create New Building Block dialog. By default, the name will be whatever number is displayed in your text, but you can change it to Page X of Y or whatever else you choose.

Leave all the other settings as is and click OK. In reply to Suzanne S. If you already have a header or footer and you want to add a page number to it, Word has an option to automatically insert the page number into the existing header or footer.

In our example, we'll add page numbering to our document's header. In some documents, you may not want the first page to show the page number. You can hide the first page number without affecting the rest of the pages. Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to A.
